An Interview with Gay Porn Model John Gadsby

John Gadsby recently reached out to provide us with the facts surrounding the HIV infection scandal that took place in 2007. Three models became infected with HIV when a fourth model, who was unknowingly HIV-positive at the time, had bareback sex with several other models. This came about as a result of two HIV tests showing that the original model was HIV-negative, when this wasn’t actually the case. The facts provided by John gave us insight into what was considered a porn scandal at the time, but we have recently discovered that the infections may have actually taken place offset due to the models barebacking and breeding each other off camera.

After corresponding with each other, John agreed to an interview so we could be given an opportunity to learn more about John and I was so excited when he said yes to my request. Not only did John agree to answer every single question I asked him, he actually followed through and answer the 40 questions I asked him, so there’s some great facts you’re going to learn about John. I am very grateful for John agreeing to an interview, and also for answering each question honestly, which demonstrates qualities it would be nice for more people to have.

I have provided some commentary about my interview with John, which was done via email due to our different timezones and work schedules, but I don’t want to spill the beans before you’ve had an opportunity to appreciate John’s interview, so my commentary is at the bottom of this page. Q1. What inspired you to get started in the adult entertainment industry? I was living in a hostel for 1 week when I applied. My ex saw an advert on gaydar, so we took a few pics and sent them off. The following week I had an interview… ie wank on cam in London, and was offered work the following week. 2 months later I made enough that I moved out of the hostel and into my first flat… so basically, quick n easy money was what inspired me, but I loved the work and carried on….

Q2. What advice would you give to someone who is wanting to become a gay porn model? Do it…. be mindful that what happens in your personal life carries over… be single and don’t over complicate things.

Q3. Which bareback movie is the one you most enjoyed filming and why? My first trip abroad was my favourite. That was called Journey to Amsterdam 2, I was the feature star… Otherwise, I liked filming outdoors as I get off on public sex, so they were always fun… Least favourite was the one where I was a mechanic, as when I was rimming the guy he farted, vile…. Q5. Did you regularly have bareback sex in your personal life before you got pozzed? Yes I did… I have only ever used condoms less than 10 times in my entire life. I hate them. About half these were in shoots…I would happily say I’d rather have no sex than use them.

Q6. Since you were filming bareback porn before PrEP, were you concerned about becoming poz or did you feel the testing was adequate enough to protect you? I wasn’t concerned, no as I always grew up with the thought that gay men had hiv so I always believed it will happen eventually… I do think that the company I worked for did all they could do, but what they couldn’t control was us all bb in our personal lives which we all did… it was inevitable that the scandal happened.

Q11. Can you tell us about the moment when you first found out you had been pozzed? When I found out I refused prep as I knew it was too late for us because of timing. When we got home I went to the coop near my bosses house and bought a bottle of champagne 🍾 for myself as the big day had happened and I no longer had to worry… the big thing on my mind then was I had just started dating a guy and had to tell him to get tested… that eventually came back poz.

Q12. After you accidentally pozzed your ex-boyfriend by not knowing you were poz when you were barebacking together, how did you both feel afterwards? I was OK with it but he wasn’t too good… we came up with a story for when his mum found out as we lived with his parents and he said his ex who moved away gave it to him, taking pressure off us… it didn’t stop him plowing me good though…

Do you think your ex-boyfriend also felt relieved after he became poz or do you feel this is something he didn’t want to have happen to him at the time, even if he became comfortable with this later on? He wasn’t comfortable at first but then we just got on with it and it never bothered him… I don’t know how he is anymore, as we broke up under bad circumstances, as I was cheating on him… I do regret cheating on him.

Q14. When you pozzed your ex-boyfriend before you had become aware that you were infected, did he become poz by topping you or did you top him sometimes as well before he became poz? In my personal life I am 100% bottom, he always fucked me… and always swallowed my load… I hate topping but I do get the urge now and again but because of my bipolar meds I struggle to get hard… I wish I was able to, then I might think of topping… I sometimes struggle to wank and no guy has finished me off in so long so I would finish myself off at home.

Q15. Did you find getting pozzed at the same time as the other models created a bond with them? At the time we had a bond…. Craig came and stayed with me while he adjusted but we all lost touch… I occasionally message my old boss and 1 or 2 of the other models. Q16. Are you still in touch with any of the other models who were pozzed at the same time and if so, how are they doing? I’m in touch with 2 but only occasionally. We wish happy birthday n stuff but really we all lost touch.

Q17. What were your initial thoughts when you found out you and two other models tested positive, while two other models remained negative? Finally, I now don’t need to worry… that was first thing that went through my mind.. I was happy that the wait was over…

Q18. The model who infected you pozzed three models initially, then you pozzed your boyfriend. Do you know of anyone else who became poz from what happened and if so, how many people do you think got pozzed as a result? Don’t know anyone else that was infected due to this situation, but I’m sure there will be others… I do know my ex who dates the original is still neg after all these years.

Q19. Prior to you getting pozzed and before PrEP became available, did you let other guys fuck you raw and cum in your arse and did you cum in their arse? Yes. I have 99% of the time not used condoms and a big turn on is when the guy cums in me… I have always been mainly bottom and since hiv I have not topped in my personal life. Q20. After you found out you had become poz, did this change your sexual practices, such as abstaining from sex or focusing on having more sex with poz guys? Kind of yes…. I looked at my life and thought it’s time to settle. I carried on in the porn industry for a while and continued my current relationship as he was fine with it. But then we split and I moved to Glasgow. I met a guy and was with him for 8 years… now I hardly have sex at all…. tbh I’m currently thinking I wish I could get back into porn as I’m gagging for it…. I just now don’t like putting it about.

Q21. Have you experienced any stigma since becoming poz and if so, how have you overcome this? Lots, mainly from the lgbt community… so as people find out they freak out even now. Or I simply get ignored…

Q22. I’m sorry to hear about the stigma you have experienced from the LGBT community. Have you found ways to overcome the stigma to become stronger and less affected that you would like to share that might help others? Only way I’ve dealt with it is by being myself and being open with it… I use it as my shield… if they react bad or stop talking to me they are not worth my time… Now though I tell people upfront so I don’t have to waste my time chasing something that’s not gonna go anywhere… I do struggle with new friendships though and some accuse me of being too open and telling them stuff that’s not interesting to them so I have to explain why I tell them in first place.

Q23. How did your HIV status impact your relationships with family, friends and partners? I didn’t really have a problem with family and friends… but with finding a new partner is an issue as some guys don’t want to risk it or understand.

Q24. Did you find you became hornier after getting pozzed and have you found sex more freeing because of your poz status? In my mind I’m hornier but in practice no as I get a lot less sex now, but that’s mainly down to fact I don’t cruise very often now or go out as much… I’m on lots of meds now with my hiv, bipolar and depression so I struggle to get hard so don’t put myself out there… I do still dream though and hope for future… if I find the guy I’m down for being a horny cum bitch again.

Q25. Has anyone asked you to infect them with HIV and if so, what was your response? Yes I’ve had few people ask me, but that would mean coming off meds and I’m not willing to do that.

Q26. It’s understandable you don’t want to come off your meds to poz a bug chaser, but if you happened to be detectable and someone asked you to poz them, would you be comfortable sharing HIV with them if they really wanted it? If I was detectable I would yes…. I still would say no to condoms, so I would pass it on, but the risk would be down to them.

Q27. Have you taken any HIV med breaks (or holidays), or have you consistently taken the medication since the time you first became infected? I started taking meds about 6 months after being infected and have never thought of coming off them… I did switch meds at one stage to a cheaper drug but it fucked my liver up so I wont switch again. I’m back on my original meds.

Q28. Was waiting 6 months before going on meds your decision to see how things went without you being on meds, or did it take this long to go through the process with medical professionals and the health system? This was down to the health system, they wanted my cd4 count under 100 before I started meds… these days you just go straight on them.

Q29. Can you recall any bareback encounters you had with other guys when you were detectable and did you cum in them or let them cum in you? My ex at the time, we never used condoms and he would always cum in me…. by time we split up I was undetectable on meds.

Q30. As someone who is poz, what are your thoughts about guys who want to convert and are you turned on by this? I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but I understand it’s a turn on as it does turn me on.

Q31. Some bug chasers are only into the fantasy side of chasing, so for those people, would you be comfortable by role playing with them and making them feel like you are pozzing them, even though you can’t because you’re undetectable? Q32. What are the main issues you’ve encountered with being poz that makes you not want to wish this on anyone? Stigma and health issues, money troubles too when the porn work dried up… Mainly health as its kicked my depression and I started meds for that… then stigma kicked in when it spread around the scene about my status. So I would cruise further afield… I’ve been bankrupt twice as I struggle with money, but I have just avoided it a 3rd time and managed to pay it all off this time… My last payment was in December last year so I’m now getting by… I have found my bipolar harder to deal with though if anything and still struggle with understanding it, but work are kinda supportive…so I’m getting by.

Q33. Do you know anyone who is a bug chaser or a gift giver and if you do, is there anything you can share that may be of interest to others? I know one guy who was a bug chaser, he is now poz… i used to give him my cum as ice cubes, but I was undetectable at the time, but it turned him on and myself… he is not on meds as far as I know but he mainly has sex with poz guys… I just don’t get any these days.

Q34. That’s really hot you gave the bug chaser your cum as ice cubes. Mainly cause I’m a little bigger these days other than my status… I’m not often on apps or go out… I disclose to everyone though and it’s a 70/30 if I score when they do find out my status.

Q36. What are your thoughts about poz guys who prefer to avoid taking HIV medication? I’m OK with it as it’s their personal choice, but I wouldn’t do it as I don’t want a bad long drawn out death. I’ve watched many films including Dallas Buyers Club and don’t want to end up ending my days like that. I rather stay out of hospital and be as healthy as I can.

Q37. Has becoming poz changed your outlook on life in any way and have there been any hurdles you’ve needed to overcome? It has changed my outlook as I don’t worry about hiv and sex side of my life now. I have more issues with my bipolar these days as I’m up and down a lot with that.

Q38. Are you partnered, single and looking for a partner or single and prefer to stay single? I have been online dating a guy for 2 years and we are finally meeting in May, he lives in Turkey. I would like to find someone who is closer to me of can freely come to the UK. I just want someone who I can be in bed cuddled with every night… any offers?

Q39. It’s hot that you find pozzing exciting, which most people visiting this website also find exciting, myself included. Are you happy with how your pozzing turned out, or would you have liked to have been pozzed differently? I’m very happy how it turned out and happened as I was made aware sooner rather than later… Before I did porn I rarely went to the clinic so I was lucky it never happened earlier… also I was getting paid to have sex so that was great and a huge turn on. I hope you enjoyed John’s interview and I want to thank John for being so open and honest with us, especially when it came to some of the more intimate details about his HIV diagnosis, sex life and thoughts about bug chasing. As you might be able to appreciate, John has experienced quite a lot throughout the past few years, but he is still hopeful and has become stronger through some of the situations that have occurred and he’s looking forward to settling down with someone and getting married and living in France or Spain, which is very romantic.

I’m not sure if you picked up on this, but John used his real name instead of a stage name when he started working in the gay porn industry and this is quite a unique stance to take, as most gay porn models use a fictitious name to separate their personal and professional lives. What this tells me is that sex is a big part of John’s life and he’s not afraid to admit to enjoying sex and being himself, which is something I’m sure we can all relate to, so when you see the name John Gadsby, you know this is the name John uses in porn and in his personal life, there are no personas or alternative identities, with John you get John.

I also found it refreshing to discover that John was comfortable with becoming poz, which is a status many barebackers needed to be comfortable with before PrEP became available, because the barrier created through the use of condoms can block some of the most intimate parts of the sexual experience, where some people would prefer to forgo a sexual encounter than using condoms. This view is still commonplace, as condoms can be seen as not only blocking the physical sensation of sex, but condoms also prohibit the flow of bodily fluids and intimacy by design from taking place through the sexual experience.

The champagne celebration marked a special moment in John’s life, because he had reached the point where he could experience relief and no longer needed to worry about the possibility of becoming infected, which is a fairly high probability at the time for any barebacker. As a bareback bottom, John’s chances of getting pozzed were higher than a bareback top’s chances of getting pozzed through bareback sex, which reinforces John’s openness towards becoming infected with HIV.

It was disappointing to read that John had been subjected to shame and stigma from the LGBTIQ+ community as a result of his positive HIV status, even though John became undetectable within a year of becoming infected. Some people, even to this day, do not understand that undetectable means untransmittable (U=U), because there’s not enough viral load to transmit the virus from one person to another. Some people also seem to still think HIV can be transmitted through kissing, hugging, holding hands or through other intimate moments, which is quite sad and demonstrates the ignorance that still exists in our community.

When I first asked John questions about HIV and bug chasing, I wasn’t sure how he would react or respond, because I wasn’t familiar with his position about these two things, so reading John’s feelings about being turned on about HIV and bug chasing was very pleasing for me, as was also discovering that John is happy about how his conversion turned out. Not many of us can say we’ve been pozzed by a gay porn star, but John can say this and many might also like the fact that John shared the gift with one other person, even though this was unintentional.

I consider it admirable for John to weigh up the risks about whether to stop HIV medication to poz someone, especially after he was approached by someone requesting this. Risk assessment is a big part about barebacking and bug chasing and even though bug chasers need someone who is detectable to help them out, it’s important for us to understand that John is not comfortable coming off meds to do this. John did reveal that he would be prepared to poz someone if he was able to, but being undetectable is something John needs to remain based on his comfort level, so I think it’s important for everyone to acknowledge and respect John for being where’s he’s at regarding this.

John is based in Glasgow, Scotland, UK and is currently single and he’s looking for a partner who he can talk to, cuddle with and spend his life with and John’s dream is to get married and live in France or Spain, which is extremely romantic.
